HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV and HHV-8 were not found in any of the donations. On the other hand, EBV was found in 72%, HHV-7 in 65%, HHV-6 type B in 30%, and CMV in 1% of the samples. Most remarkably, one donor sample was found to have greater than 6.1 × 107 HHV-6 type B genome equivalents per mL of blood. The recent MGH conference may have given the medical students the impression that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a disease that strikes unfortunate women for mysterious reasons. There needs to be a conference with male patients on the panel and also with doctors and nurses who have contracted the illness on the job. The young doctors learning about this illness need to be warned that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a serious contagious disease that they can contract while treating it. Anecdotal evidence suggests that a number of doctors (and nurses) involved in treating or researching the illness have contracted it.
