There are no good animal models of chronic HHV6 infection, so we are using the “Alzheimer’s in a dish” system to look at this at the moment. Each chip is like a little human brain, that is basically thinking and shooting signals back and forth. This makes the experimental model more human-like and allows for better testing. We found that HHV6 induced a large amyloid burden in the “Alzheimer’s in a dish” system within a day. Key to our findings is that these herpes viruses are “low and slow” microbes whose pathogenic activity ramps up with opportunity. This makes HHV6 extremely effective at seeding amyloid beta deposition over time, even over the course of decades.
