HHV-6/7/8 and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are deathwatch beetles.
In the February 3, 2019 issue of The New York Times Book Review, Ann Marie Lipinksky reviewed Breaking News by Alan Rusbridger. According to Lipinksky, "A deathwatch beetle is an insidious insect, eating away at furniture or homes, capable of destroying them if left undetected. 'The structures look sound,' Alan Rusbridger writes, 'but have been hollowed out from within and, if you're really unlucky, turn to dust.'"
While the metaphor of deathwatch beetles is being used for the state of the media, it struck us that it is also an apt metaphor or the issues this website focuses on. The HHV-6 family of viruses driving the AIDS and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome spectrum of illnesses are also deathwatch beetles. Millions of lives are being hollowed out by them. So is the state of medicine and science.
